AFFRON CROCUS BULBS

Saffron Crocus (Crocus Sativus) is a very interesting Fall flowering specie. Grow your own saffron (the most expensive spice in the world), with this beautiful crocus. It produces large sterile, rich lilac flowers with distinctive purple veins in October and November. An autumn-flowering crocus, it is named after its three long, deep-red stigmas, which are cultivated commercially for coloring and flavoring food. This variety will give plenty of blooms the first year throwing the expensive saffron spices used for many culinary dishes. The bulbs can be left in the ground for 6 consecutive years and your best harvest for saffron will be reached in the second year after planting. We supply the biggest bulbs on the market, 9/10 cm. We hold an excellent stock which we have been contracting with the best grower for many years!
Drifts an masse are spectacular in garden and path side borders, and in meandering rivers through sun dappled woodlands. (If you do plant them in lawns, mowing should be held off until the foliage dies back naturally, about five weeks after blooming.) They have graceful six-petaled, 5” tall flowers that open and close on sunny days, and grass-like foliage with narrow, median silver-white stripes.

Planting:

Saffron Crocus (Crocus Sativus) are Deer-resistant, they naturalize readily in well-draining soil and in full to partial sunlight. These larger corms have reticulated tunics. They may be a target for squirrels that may dig up newly planted bulbs for a snack, or for transplant elsewhere. You’ll need about nine corms (bulbs) per square foot for a dense planting.

If planting in the garden, plant the bulbs about 8" apart. Space the groupings at least 3 feet apart. If planting in pots, plant 3 bulbs in a 10-14" 'patio type' pot using good-quality, multi-purpose compost.

Plant the Saffron Crocus Bulbs (Crocus Sativus) with 4-6" of soil above them.

Maintenance:

Fertilize in the spring with a well-balanced fertilizer when signs of growth appear. Keep the plants well-watered during the growth period. It’s best to water at ground level to minimize fungal diseases and flower discoloration. Maintain a layer of mulch to keep the soil cool and maintain moisture but keep the mulch away from the stems to prevent rot. Lilies prefer “their head in the sun and their feet in the shade.”

WE GUARANTEE LIVE DELIVERY. Let us know immediately upon arrival if the plants are in poor condition. We cannot guarantee plants that are no longer in our care. Many of our plants require warm temperatures. Shipping to areas that are cold will be at buyer's risk. We offer quality plants that are inspected and approved for shipment.
