Bob Gordon elderberry is a cultivated variety of the native elderberry shrub, renowned for its high fruit yield and exceptional adaptability. This cultivar is favored for both ornamental and practical uses, as its berries are rich in nutrients and can be used in various culinary applications, such as jams, jellies, wines, and syrups.
Physical Characteristics
Height: Typically grows between 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 meters).
Spread: Can reach a width of 5 to 7 feet (1.5 to 2.1 meters).
Leaves: Pinnately compound with 5 to 9 leaflets, each about 3 to 5 inches long, featuring a deep green color with serrated edges.

Fruit: Dark purple to black berries that ripen in late summer. These berries are high in antioxidants and vitamins but should be cooked before consumption to eliminate potential toxins.
Growing Conditions
Soil Requirements
Soil Type: Prefers well-drained, moist soil enriched with organic matter but is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils.
Select a Site: Choose a location that receives full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Ensure adequate space for the shrub to grow, ideally allowing 6 to 10 feet between plants.
Prepare the Soil: Amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost, to improve fertility and drainage.
Planting:
Seedlings/Transplants: Dig a hole that is twice the width and the same depth as the root ball.
Place the root ball in the hole, ensuring the crown is level with the soil surface.
Backfill the hole with soil and lightly tamp it down to remove air pockets.
Watering: Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help establish roots. Maintain consistent moisture, especially during the first growing season.
Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (such as wood chips or straw) around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Fertilization: In early spring, consider applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support growth, but avoid over-fertilizing.
