Marge elderberry is a cultivated variety of the native elderberry shrub, known for its exceptional fruit production and attractive ornamental qualities. This cultivar is appreciated for its high yield of berries, which are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, and can be used in a variety of culinary applications, such as jams, syrups, and wines.
Physical Characteristics
Height: Typically grows between 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters).
Spread: Can reach a width of 5 to 7 feet (1.5 to 2.1 meters).
Leaves: Pinnately compound with 5 to 9 leaflets, each measuring about 3 to 5 inches long, featuring a vibrant green color with serrated edges.
Flowers: Produces large clusters of small, creamy white flowers in flat-topped umbels that bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowers are attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Fruit: Dark purple to black berries that ripen in late summer. These berries are packed with nutrients and should be cooked before consumption to neutralize potential toxins.
Planting Steps
Select a Site: Choose a location that receives full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Ensure there is adequate space for the shrub to grow, ideally allowing 6 to 10 feet between plants.
Prepare the Soil: Amend the soil with organic matter, such as compost, to improve fertility and drainage.
Planting:
Seedlings/Transplants: Dig a hole that is twice the width and the same depth as the root ball.
Place the root ball in the hole, making sure the crown is level with the soil surface.
Backfill the hole with soil and lightly tamp it down to remove air pockets.
Watering: Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help establish roots. Maintain consistent moisture, particularly during the first growing season.
Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (such as wood chips or straw) around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Fertilization: In early spring, consider applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support robust growth, but avoid over-fertilizing.
Marge elderberry is an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, providing food and habitat for various birds and beneficial insects. Its attractive flowers can enhance garden aesthetics and may also be used in floral arrangements. To maximize berry production, consider planting multiple elderberry varieties to improve cross-pollination. Always check local regulations, as elderberries may have specific protections in certain areas.
