Johns Elderberry
Johns elderberry is a cultivated variety of the native elderberry plant, specifically bred for its superior fruit yield and adaptability. This deciduous shrub is prized for its ornamental qualities, fragrant flowers, and abundant dark berries, which are great for culinary uses, including jams, jellies, and wines.
Physical Characteristics
Height: Typically grows between 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters).
Spread: Can reach a width of 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 meters).
Leaves: Pinnately compound with 5 to 9 leaflets, each measuring 3 to 5 inches long, with a rich green color and a serrated edge.
Flowers: Produces large, flat-topped clusters (umbels) of small, creamy white flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. These flowers are highly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Fruit: Dark purple to black berries that ripen in late summer, which are used in various culinary applications. Raw berries should be cooked before consumption to neutralize toxins.
Soil Requirements
Soil Type: Prefers well-drained, moist soils rich in organic matter. Tolerates clay and sandy soils.
Planting Steps
Select a Site: Choose a location with full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Ensure adequate space for the shrub to grow, ideally allowing for 6 to 10 feet of spacing between multiple plants.
Prepare the Soil: Amend the planting area with organic matter like compost to enhance fertility and drainage.
Planting:
Seedlings/Transplants: Dig a hole twice the width and the same depth as the root ball.
Place the root ball in the hole, making sure the crown of the plant is level with the soil surface.
Fill in with soil and tamp lightly to remove air pockets.
Watering: Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help establish roots. Maintain consistent moisture, especially in the first growing season.
Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (such as wood chips or straw) around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Fertilization: In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage robust growth, but avoid over-fertilization.
Johns elderberry is an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, as it provides food and habitat for birds and beneficial insects. The fragrant flowers are also attractive in gardens and can be used in floral arrangements. When planting, consider incorporating multiple elderberry varieties to improve cross-pollination and enhance berry yield. As with all elderberries, check local regulations, as elderberries may have specific protections in some areas.
