Description and Planting Instructions
Description:
Scientific Name: Cissus quadrangularis
Common Names: Veldt Grape, Devil's Backbone, Adamant Creeper, Asthisamharaka
Family: Vitaceae
Origin: Native to tropical Asia, Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula
Appearance: The Veldt Grape is a perennial vine known for its distinctive four-sided, winged stems. The succulent stems are green and segmented, with nodes where leaves and tendrils emerge. The leaves are simple, ovate to triangular, and can be up to 2 inches (5 cm) long. Small, greenish-white flowers appear in clusters, followed by small, red to purple berries. This plant is often grown for its ornamental and medicinal properties.
Planting Instructions
1. Choosing the Right Location
Climate:
Temperature: Veldt Grape prefers warm temperatures and thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. It can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 9-11.
Sunlight: This plant requires full sun to partial shade. It does best with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Soil:
Type: Use well-draining soil. A sandy or loamy soil mix is ideal. If planting in containers, use a cactus or succulent mix.
pH: The optimal soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.0 and 7.5.
2. Preparing the Planting Site
Containers:
Pot Selection: Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from sitting in the soil, which can cause root rot.
Soil Preparation: Fill the pot with the well-draining soil mix, leaving enough room to place the plant.
Garden Bed:
Location: Select a sunny spot with well-draining soil.
Soil Preparation: Amend the soil with sand or grit to improve drainage if necessary.
3. Planting the Veldt Grape
Timing:
Season: Planting is best done in the spring or early summer when the plant is actively growing.
Planting:
Removing from Container: Carefully remove the plant from its current container, being mindful of the delicate stems. Using gloves can help protect your hands.
Placement: Place the plant in the new pot or garden bed at the same depth it was previously growing.
Backfilling: Fill in around the plant with soil mix, gently firming it down to support the plant.
4. Watering
Frequency: Water the Veldt Grape thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
Method: Water at the base of the plant to avoid getting water on the stems, which can cause rot.
5. Light and Temperature
Indoors: Place the plant in a south or west-facing window where it can receive bright, direct sunlight.
Outdoors: If grown outdoors, ensure it is in a location with plenty of sunlight but some protection from the harsh midday sun to prevent scorching.
6. Fertilizing
Type: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Frequency: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize during the winter when the plant is dormant.
7. Pest and Disease Management
Pests: Watch for common pests such as mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Diseases: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. If necessary, apply fungicides labeled for use on ornamental plants.
8. Pruning and Support
Pruning: Prune the plant to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems.
Support: Provide a trellis or other support structure for the vine to climb on, as it can grow quite vigorously.
9. Propagation
Cuttings: The Veldt Grape can be easily propagated from stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem segment, allow it to callus over for a day or two, then plant it in well-draining soil.
Seeds: Although less common, it can also be propagated from seeds. Sow the seeds in well-draining soil and keep them moist until they germinate.
Additional Tips
Winter Care: Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant is dormant. Protect it from frost if grown outdoors in cooler climates.
Handling: Be careful when handling the plant due to its fragile stems. Using gloves or tools can help prevent injury.
Medicinal Use: The Veldt Grape is known for its medicinal properties and is often used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, particularly for bone health.
With proper care and attention to its specific needs, the Veldt Grape can be a striking and beneficial addition to your plant collection.
